Detailed information on Late 19th- to Early 20th-Century Provençal Estanier in Walnut - 32¼\"

This petite Provençal estanier, crafted in walnut with a beautiful warm chocolate-brown patina, combines rustic charm with refined simplicity. The molded cornice sits above a scalloped frieze carved with a small central star, while the softly curved sides frame three open tiers fitted with gallery lips designed to hold pottery, pewter, or glassware securely in place. Two drawers, each fitted with a round brass knob finely chased with a delicate floral frieze, complete the base. The piece remains in very good condition, showing a gently aged finish with minor marks, light edge wear, and natural color variations that enrich its surface.
Rooted in the tradition of southern craftsmanship, the estanier combined practicality with quiet elegance, serving as a display for treasured household pieces, originally for the tin collection (étain in French), from which its name is derived. The carved star, a motif frequently found in Provençal furniture, reflects the region’s enduring affection for simple yet meaningful ornament. It may have symbolized good fortune or simply echoed the celestial patterns and folk motifs common in local carving.
This compact piece is well suited to a kitchen or breakfast room for displaying pottery, glassware, or spices, whether set on a counter or mounted on the wall with the addition of discreet brackets at the back. It also works beautifully in an entry for mail and keys, with the small drawers ideal for keeping odds and ends, or in a bathroom for toiletries and soaps. Wherever it is placed, it brings added charm, warmth, and character, infusing any space with the inviting spirit of Provençal craftsmanship.
